Algonquin High Alum Excels Near Nation's Capital and at Oxford

Algonquin High Alum Excels near Washington, D.C.; Aims for Law School

Nicole Henry of Northborough, Mass. already is making a mark on the nation's capital, even before she graduates from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. this spring.

Henry is a graduate of Algonquin Regional High School, where she excelled as a three-sport athlete, competing in soccer, gymnastics and track and field. Her soccer team won the state championship in 2009. Henry also belonged to the National Honor Society and class steering committee.

Now, she's majoring in integrative studies at George Mason's New Century College (NCC), with a legal studies concentration and international comparative studies minor. She excelled in courses in government, politics, criminology, philosophy, research  and written and oral communication skills, and that helped her land a coveted, full-time internship at the U.S. State Department in nearby Washington, D.C. for which she earned experiential learning credits through NCC. "I was able to learn an incomparable amount during this experience about U.S. foreign policy, the State Department and professional career opportunities in this field," she says.

She also studied abroad at the University of Oxford. "I am extremely thankful that I had the opportunity to study abroad and intern to gain hands-on experience while also receiving credits. I believe these were some of my most influential experiences while at school. I was able to cater my studies to the courses I needed and grew drastically as both a student and a person. I even had the opportunity to take a few weekend trips around Europe!"

Henry says she's "heavily involved" in Greek Life on campus. She's held leadership positions in her own chapter and participated in community service and philanthropy events as well as social activities within the Greek community. "As a chapter, we hold events to raise money for women's heart health. In addition, as a community we support each other's philanthropic causes.  During Mason's Greek Week, as a community we raise money for Habitat for Humanity and collect canned food for Northern Virginia's Food of Others," she describes.

Henry also served on the executive board of the Panhellenic Council as the vice president of membership recruitment. This semester, she was awarded the 2013 Panhellenic Council Woman of the Year award. She also belongs to the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

Henry's heading straight to law school this fall to study international law. "For the past year I have been working at a workers' compensation law firm and love reading decisions for legal research and the process of building a case for trial. I have always been fascinated in the legal system; the law is found in every part of our lives and I believe that lawyers have the power to make a positive difference in the community around them. I am definitely excited to start this new chapter in my life."
